Steve Miller hosts benefit for Norton Buffalo's family
By Suzanne Kayian / LiveDaily Contributor

Steve Miller is hosting a benefit concert for Norton Buffalo's wife and children Jan. 23 at The Fox Theater in Oakland, CA. Buffalo, who spent 33 years as a member of the Steve Miller Band, died last Friday (10/30) after battling lung and brain cancer.

The "Tribute to Norton Buffalo" also will feature The Doobie Brothers with special guests Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis, George Thorogood, Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite.

Buffalo, who was 58 when he died, was a renowned harmonica player, singer, songwriter, actor and record producer. A Northern California native, Buffalo established himself in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1970s. During his extensive career, he performed on 180 albums with a number of high-profile artists, including Raitt, Mickey Hart and Merl Saunders. Buffalo also played harmonica on The Doobie Brothers' Grammy award-winning album "Minute By Minute." Buffalo recorded his own music in addition to being an in-demand session player. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992 for a song from his 1991 album with guitarist Roy Rogers. Information about the benefit concert can be found at The Fox Theater website.

ELVIN BISHOP'S ALL-STAR ALBUM 'THE BLUES ROLLS ON' HARKS BACKS TO HIS ROOTS, DUE OUT SEPT. 23 ON DELTA GROOVE MUSIC
. B. B. KING, DEREK TRUCKS, WARREN HAYNES, JAMES COTTON, KIM WILSON, GEORGE THOROGOOD AND OTHERS SUPPORT

Elvin Bishop the founding member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band whose music has been called "sheer, unpretentious joy" by Entertainment Weekly has completed work on 'The Blues Rolls On.' Due September 23 on Delta Groove Recordings, the album harks back to Bishop's roots, paying tribute to the musicians who helped give him his start. A who's who of blues musicians support Bishop on the album, including B. B. King, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, George Thorogood, James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Tommy Castro, John Nemeth, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and Angela Strehli. Bishop handles the majority of the vocals, with Nemeth and others pitching in as well.

Bishop revisits his own '70s solo hit "Struttin' My Stuff" with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, Junior Wells' "Come On In This House," and the Butterfield Band's "Yonders Wall" and Hound Dog Taylor's "Send You Back To Georgia." He also contributes the autobiographical boogie "Oklahoma," played solo electric. Sessions for the rollicking album ranged from Jacksonville, FL to Clarksdale, MS, and to a cruise ship off the Mexican coast.

Bishop is a slide guitar great with 45-years of blues under his belt. Rolling Stone has tagged Bishop's music as “raucous," praising his "careening slide and razor-edged bursts, all delivered with unflagging enthusiasm and wit.” He is a founding member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and recorded three groundbreaking albums with the group. After launching a solo career, Bishop's 1976 single "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" reached number three on Billboard's Pop Singles chart, pushing the album 'Struttin' My Stuff' to number 18 on the the Pop Albums chart. He has performed on recordings by John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, and The Allman Brothers Band, among many others. On stage, he's wielded his guitar to accompany the likes of John Lee Hooker, Hendrix, Big Joe Williams, Little Walter, Wells, Taylor, and many others.
